Mike worked in the West of Scotland Local Government social services for twenty years until 1996, the last five years of which was as Strathclyde Region's Principal Advisor for physical and sensory impairment. In 1996, he became a full-time Local Government Councillor until 1999. In 2000, he became the Drug Action Team Coordinator supporting a multi-agency approach to addressing drug problems in Greater Glasgow and he contributed to the development of Scotland-wide strategy as a member of the Scottish Advisory Committee on Drugs Misuse.
Over the last twenty years, Mike has been a trustee for a variety of charitable, community and enterprise organisations. He is particularly interested in helping community organisations have a stronger voice and in advocating the introduction of a universal basic income to reduce or prevent people's financial insecurities.
