Stanmore House School in Lanark supports children with complex needs through a multidisciplinary combination of teaching and therapy. Stanmore House uses a 'whole school theme' approach to learning, which means students focus their learning around one topic.

Our learners are at the heart of everything we do. Our aim is to support children and young people with complex additional support needs to fulfil their potential – whatever that may be.

As well as being a school, Stanmore House also has a residential element and offers boarding, short breaks, and emergency respite.

Personalised Approach

At Stanmore House School pupils follow an Individual Education Programme (IEP) which is developed in consultation with parents. The school follows an adapted Curriculum for Excellence tailored to their individual needs. When pupils reach secondary school, they are included in the National Qualification framework and have the opportunity to receive formal accreditation.

We also support pupils to participate in ASDAN modules, Wider Achievement Awards (such as the John Muir Award), and Green Tree Schools.

Learners enjoy engaging in a wide range of educational experiences. These could be within the classroom, the school, the community, or in specialist therapy sessions.

Specialist Support

Children and young people at Stanmore House have access to a range of care and allied health services to support their complex needs. These include:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Speech and language therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Dietary support

Getting it Right for Every Child

Capability Scotland is committed to giving its pupils a voice in their education. Pupils at Stanmore House have the opportunity to give their opinions on important matters at regular Pupil Council meetings. The school also has an active Eco Committee, which discusses environmental issues. We’re also passionate about providing a ‘Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC)’ approach, focusing on the well-being and outcomes for each individual learner.

Inspiring Innovation

Stanmore uses state-of-the-art assistive technology to support and enrich the learning experience for pupils. This includes Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) aids, interactive touch screens, eye-tracking computers and much more.

Our school campus has a range of other great offerings. We have hydrotherapy, rebound therapy, sensory experiences and stories, community outings. We even have our own on-site cinema experience and beauty therapy rooms.
